For Christians in the United States of America, the Bible appears to have suffered a serious reversal of fortune in its standing in public life. While there are those in all sectors of our society who wish it were not so, one cannot deny the relevance, role, and yes, even authority, that the Bible has explicitly played in shaping American life and culture.
Historically, the Bible's influence has been tremendous across all aspects of life and living: surely, it formed the basis for the Common Law from which all American laws have been birthed, and it has been the motivation for the origins of modern science. Yet, today we are confronted with the unfounded notion that the Bible is not fit for public service. Great attempts are aimed at denying the legitimacy of the use of Biblical principles and guidance in the public realm. As a result, we are witnessing significant breakdowns in almost all areas of individual, family, community, and national life.
The Christian Association of Public Theologians (CAPT) was founded specifically to embrace conscious engagement with the Bible as our ultimate authority across all aspects of life and living, and specifically to re-position its principles and authority across the public spectrum. Let us take every opportunity that God gives us, formally and informally, to point to Scripture and its comprehensive sufficiency for all faith, life, and being.
